14 feng shui misconceptions

14 Feng Shui Misconceptions debunk

Over time these feng shui misconceptions seem to stay even after i started doing feng shui 20 years ago. Most of us are Master’s degrees or Ph.D holders, yet these misconceptions continues till today. i got to give them the vote for creative imagination to come up with  mythological symbolism of buffalo, dragon, pheonix…

Seriously does rolling of pineapples actually bring good luck to the family on key collection day or is it peace of mind because granny say so. Some masters advise no ceiling fan for humid singapore. Others associate lucky numbers such as 8, 6, 1, 9 or unlucky numbers like 4. Having a mirror beside your dining table is doubling your food or abundance, i can also view it as high cholesterol or gluttony. Sometimes i think about feng shui is quite a creative industry with stories of tilted beds, slanted doors, perpendicular cupboards are poison arrows, number of burners equate number of wives etc.

Singapore feng shui scene is overwhelmed with contradicting advice which  makes it difficult to decipher and distilled the true teachings. Finding a good feng shui master in Singapore is even more challenging due to increased supply, planted reviews and clones. In my opinion here are some common misconceptions about feng shui.

1. Feng shui is religious or spiritual or superstitious

Most misrepresentations stem from individual feng shui master personal religious beliefs and their integration of spirituality in feng shui remedies. Don’t get me wrong i have nothing against any religion or faith. In fact it is great to have a belief. There are no feng shui scripts that supports the use of religion in feng shui applications. Thus for those who are skeptical, i don’t blame you because this is how i started in 1993 as a staunch non-believer of feng shui.

2. Tilting of Main Door 斜门 as a feng shui cure

There is a lot of drama clouding the concept of “tilting the main door” to correct negative qi 气 or energy.  One wonder, by manipulating the angle of the door direction will the air & light (energy) travel a different degree? There are many ways to align yourself with positive energies, tilting the door according to my early experimentations does not work.

One of my client was told by a feng shui master to tilt the main door because it faces a multi-storey carpark. Do you think that it is possible by adjusting the door, the “assumed bad physical environment attributes” will go away? How about the fumes and noise will that go away? Slanted door looks awkward! And worse of all you are telling the whole world that your house possess bad feng shui which makes re-selling a problem.

3. Feng shui misconception to use mirror to double your abundance

One of my client asked me that he read some books stating that placing a mirror besides the dinning table double the amount of food on the table. I told him why don’t the feng shui master advised your to place the mirror besides your safe, then you double your money?

4. Singapore feng shui products

Every year people attend free annual feng shui seminar ended up buying not-free annual feng shui products “manufacture” by the speakers. For those who followed religiously 3-5 years, their house or office will look like a fengshui shop. All the energies of each year conflicting with each other. They do not dare to throw the old ones afraid that disasters might happen. Or some due to the high price are unwilling to throw it away.

Some of my clients even get confused and forgot what these figurines are use for. On one instance my client bought an “elephant figurine” to ward off bad energies from the construction site. If one is to dig deeper, elephant intake water and supposed to face the sea or lake when water is not align with feng shui energy not to defend against construction.

5. Risks of self-help annual feng shui products

Placing annual self-help feng shui items from books without checking your home destiny is risky.

danger of annual feng shuiTake this house destiny for example, sitting West facing East. In 2014 auspicious flying star 9 is at North sector. If you follow the books to place plants to grow fire star 9 then you are in trouble.

This is because due to the House Destiny energy map, North sector is 5 and 2 combo, both earth elements and represent misfortune or sickness. In 5 elements theory, wood conquers earth, by following the self-help you are antagonsing the earth element which would have bad repercussions.

6. Misconception of feng shui cleanising power

What sort of cleansing solutions do you need? for forms or “qi”? or both? Most feng shui principles comes with built-in cures for bad energies, not necessary to buy feng shui items. Take an example of the common 8 mansions feng shui theory, 天医 positive energies can counter 绝命 negative energies. In dire straits situation where the house is so negative, we used common items to dilute the bad energies.

Feng shui standard protocol is to use 1 of the 5 methods or in combination i.e. 遮  hide、挡 block、化 dilute、斗 fight 、避 avoid . Any deviations from these 5 methods are not authentic feng shui practice.

7. Feng shui  Gua symbolism – South East is wealth sector omg

One common misnomer is to associate South-East sector as the Wealth sector.  Some masters even advised their clients to install a water feature in the south-east sector of your house and boom, you get instant wealth like 3-in-1 coffee. Well if feng shui is that simple, multi billionaires will spring up like mushrooms. The thing is, people often look for instant results in feng shui. But they failed to realise that no gains without pains. Wealth creation is through personal effort and discipline not feng shui. Feng shui merely supplements and prevent you from getting hurt from the environment. Moreover one also have to consider our own birth profile, personality and 10-Year Luck pillars.

8. Feng shui numbers 8 is lucky, 4 means death and floor level

Feng shui is not about “sounding” good, authentic feng shui principles are based on certain algorithm and calculations whichever sect of feng shui schools.

“4” in xuan kong flying star feng shui represents wen chang 文昌 , scholarly pursue and is good for children or adults pursuing their education. “4” in birth profile analysis and choice of “lucky name” calculation represent “ding” 丁火 fire; “4” and “9” in 河图洛书 represent the west sector and “4” together with “9” form metal. So 4 means death is not found in feng shui classics. “13” in the chapter of names reading is a lucky number. i presume number “13” got the bad association from the movie Friday the 13th. Imagine buildings without 4th storey, birth certificates without numeric 4 or 13, then what will happen? Block and street names without these numbers? Mathematical calculation without these numbers? Chaos right? It is just a number nothing more, itself has no power on it’s own and there is nothing bad luck about it.

Unlike common thinking even the floor level or storey that you stayed in does not matter at all in today’s environment. The rationale is simple in most apartments we have basement multi storey carpark, so should you consider the carpark to calculate the floor level or not?

9. Feng shui get-rich-strike-4D

Some masters in their own website show testimonials of their clients winning 4D and toto. Not sure they are promoting feng shui or gambling. Feng shui applications can enhance one’s luck but nothing as dramatic as winning toto or 4D. If feng shui enhancement can make us strike lottery i don’t think there are any feng shui masters in the world, because most of them are billionaires by now.

10. Footboard of bed not supposed to face the door LOL

Not sure how this theory come about, i was told by my client that he was advised that footboard of the bed should not be facing the door. One thing for sure the headboard slat should not be a void space and you should not place your bed beside the door. This is due to “yin-yang” principle.

11. Feng shui guarantee results

Who can guarantee results, even specialist doctors can’t guarantee cures after an operation, let alone feng shui is not an exact science. Feng shui masters are humans not God. Moreover there are so many factors that influence a person’s luck e.g. birth profile strengths & weaknesses, effort, luck pillars, personality, work experience, education, birth era and many others?

12. Feng shui misconception on the colour red

i have consulted some feng shui done by other masters…not sure why their signature application is to put red door mat and hang red cloth at the main door that looks like “wedding” ceremony. Chinese culture associate “red” as the auspicious colour. Red in feng shui represents the “most yang” 阳 energy and “black” is the most “yin” 阴 energy. Red in the 5 element chain represent “fire”. Therefore please be mindful that your “red” item is not where the house destiny chart “2” or “5” resides.

13. Feng Shui Water and Fire Confrontation

This is by far one of the most dramatic exaggeration on the conflict between the position of sink i.e. water and burner-stove in the kitchen. i got a client that is so terrify that they order package dinners, which is just as unhealthy. The misconceptions are fridge vs stove, washing machine vs stove. Check kitchen feng shui.

14. Luck transfer like cloning

Some clients feedback to me that their their ex-masters can do “luck transfer” to objects or even people. Not sure if it works but the masters should “transformed” themselve to billionaires like Mr Bill Gates or Steve Jobs for innovations.

Tough love to choose a good feng shui master in Singapore

Here are some hints based on feedback from my clients which maybe useful to you.

a. Do they oversell by guarantee results?
b. Does the feng shui master uses feng shui items and sell them at their shop?
c. Do you need to spend hundreds or thousand of dollars to purchase feng shui items from him or her?
d. Scared tactics that the feng shui will not work if you don’t buy their feng shui products (not anywhere else) and they are not responsible for the feng shui results?
e. Does he integrates Birth profiling or Bazi reading tips into feng shui applications?
f. Does he hide behind some “power” Chinese phrases to impress you instead of making it easy for you to understand?
g. Does the website carries a strong religious or spiritual overtones?
h. Does he claim added advantage due to direct lineage? It can mean good or bad, good if the follower improve & adapt, bad if there are no improvisations to classical principles.
i. Does the website filled with figurines of mythology creatures like dragon, 3 leg toad?
j. Is there a customised report (non-computer-generated) for record purposes?

Feng shui master pte ltd consultation style is simple, direct and effective. The Chinese saying sums it all “the way of nature, and so is the truth in feng shui principles. Only in simplicity comes greatness and complexity 大道至简,方能以简御繁

“less is more in feng shui audit”.
